Gold has been used in home décor since the days of Cleopatra.  Every century that goes by has a re-emergence of an updated gold trend. The 21st is no different.

We find that many in the Calgary market have a quick and strong aversion to this trend. This is probably because it wasn’t that long ago that we were tearing out old brass fixtures left over from the 80s, to replace them with brushed nickel. But, now we are  seeing it as “the latest trend”.

All aspects of design are cyclical. The general use of brass in the 80s was on ornate, shiny fixtures.  Thankfully the trend now is quite different.

First of all, it’s “gold” not brass.

Yes, we realize that we are splitting hairs.  But with the more muted tones, and differing patinas and styles, the term “gold” helps to set this trend apart from the bad memories of years past.

Gold is a great way to introduce luxury and drama to your Calgary kitchen or bathroom renovation.

“What colors work best with gold accents and products?”

COLOR PAIRINGS:

No matter what your preferred lines may be, such as in your kitchen cabinetry, bathroom vanities, furniture or fixtures, gold can be paired with a wide range of other colors. So, before deciding which way to go on the color wheel, decide what the final feel of your Calgary kitchen or bathroom renovation will be.

If you want your space to give you life, energy and drama, try pairing warm gold accents, with their hot neighboring colors on the color wheel. color wheel

It is easy to pair gold accents with reds, oranges and yellows since they share the same underlying tones. Set against these strong colors, gold is able to really sparkle.  This mix lends itself to more patterned and worldly or dramatic spaces. However, if you are sticking with pops of these colors, it can stay quite light.

When choosing a contemporary color palette, and adding gold accents, travel across the color wheel for contrasting blue-tones that enhance the gold’s presence in traditional and transitional room designs.

Navy blue or purple adds opulence when paired with gold accents, such as frames or mirrors.

Green-ish or blue-ish greys added with brushed golds gives an airy feel by softening the contrasts of the warm/cold color mix. When you’re checking out the cool side of the color wheel, you’ll also find that jewel tones, including turquoise, emerald green, cobalt, and sapphire blues, make great companions for metallic gold.

If you want to stay neutral overall, but would like to add some gold glitz to stay on point with this latest design trend, remember that gold is a natural material.  So pairing it with neutral, natural elements is a great match!

The trick is to pair metallic gold with warm, deep-tone neutrals, such as charcoal or slate gray, chocolate and coffee browns, dark sage and olive greens, and deep tan and beige. White works, as well, but it may create a too-cool contrast when paired with metallic gold. A better choice is off-white warmed with red, brown, or gray undertones, such as chamois, ivory, or ash white.

If you like white washed, pastels or contemporary rooms, opt for a metallic gold with a rich undertone and maybe a tarnished patina so that it doesn’t fade into the background. The tarnish will help give them weight, so they are more visual.
